What you may not be expecting is all of the requisite gear you "need" to look after your dear bundle. Fear not. Denise and Alan Fields, authors of Bridal Bargains, are here to tell you what's super and what's silly, and how to find it at the best price. You'll learn all about how (and where) to shop for a crib and dresser (including how to get European styling at reasonable prices), what you need in bedding and what can be skipped (a hint: no baby requires the $200 quilt!), which clothing brands are safest and least expensive, and how to shop for monitors, toys, car seats, strollers, books, videos, and more. The authors have field-tested every major brand (and several of the minor ones), and they provide star ratings and annotations at the end of every chapter. A helpful feature in each chapter called "Wastes of Money" will steer you away from $35 Baby Air Jordans and frilly diaper stackers that match your bedding. If that's not enough, they offer a money-back guarantee: If the book doesn't save you at least $250 in baby expenses, they'll refund the price of the book. Well researched and written in a witty and comfortable tone, Baby Bargains should be required reading for every safety- and money-conscious parent-to-be. --Rebecca A. Staffel

A hidden epidemic races around the globe -- we can't see it or touch it, which makes it so dangerous. The invisible epidemic has led to the suffering of millions who spend billions on drugs, only to find they don't work. This is an epidemic of broken brains."Broken brains" go by many names -- depression, anxiety, memory loss, brain fog, attention deficit disorder, autism, and dementia, to name a few -- and show up in radically different ways from person to person, making each seem like a separate problem. But the truth is that these "diagnoses" are all the result of a few basic problems with our biology. Pinpoint these biological problems, fix them, and let your body's natural healing intelligence take over to repair your brain. Now you can experience an UltraMind -- one that is highly focused and able to pay attention at will, with a strong, reliable memory and a mood that is calm, confident, in control, and in good spirits. We have all heard of the mind-body connection or how our thoughts affect the health of our body. But the reverse is far more powerful: what you do to your body, your basic biology, has a profound effect on your brain.Have you ever experienced instant clarity after exercise? Alertness after drinking coffee? A mental crash after popping candy? Does your brain inexplicably slow down during stress, while multitasking, or when meeting a deadline? Each is an example of how what we do to our bodies -- whether through nutrition, sleep, exercise, or stress -- has a dramatic effect on our brains.Conventional treatments don't help, or provide only slight benefit, because they just manage symptoms rather than deal with -- and heal -- the underlying problem. And just as brain problems all stem from the same root causes, they all have the same solution -- The UltraMind Solution. Our ancient genes interact with our environment to create systemic imbalances that affect our brains. Correct those imbalances -- most caused by nutritional deficiencies, allergens, infections, toxins, and stress -- and you can achieve optimum mental health without drugs or psychotherapy. The UltraMind Solution is the future of medicine, the culmination of the last twenty years of research on what makes the brain happy, focused, and calm; research that has uncovered a few simple factors that explain why things go wrong and how to fix them.Don't wait for this revolution in medicine to trickle into your doctor's office: it usually takes research twenty years to move from the lab to the patient. The answers are here, right now, in The UltraMind Solution.

All three kids in school full-time. For the first time in a decade I’ll have my days to myself! I’ll write another book, get to the gym four times a week, run for political office, save the baby seals . . .” Almost immediately, she started throwing up. Around the clock. She knew the drill. She was definitely pregnant . . . with her fourth child . . . and about to turn forty-three.Time to break out the big pants again. While Susan thought that the next chapter of her and her husband’s lives involved making plans for their impending child-free, swinging middle-aged-dom, instead she’s back to two A.M. feedings. Meanwhile her tween daughter is receiving her first phone calls from . . . boys! And in between this twelve-year-old and the newborn are two rambunctious sons, eight and five.So it’s training wheels and training bras; first dance, last diaper; Miss Clairol and Ben & Jerry. Will Susan ever get back into shape? And what shape was that, exactly? Will she be the oldest mom at preschool in a few years? Will she survive that long? And will she and her husband cope with a national radio show that brings their disorganized household to the whole country?Acclaimed humorist Susan Konig follows her successful debut, Why Animals Sleep So Close to the Road (and Other Lies I Tell My Children), with this charming, hilarious, and realistic account of being a mom. After all, it’s a big job---and it requires big pants.  “A witty collection of motherhood tales . . . in the great tradition of Erma Bombeck.”---Publishers Weekly on I Wear the Maternity Pants in This Family Praise for Why Animals Sleep So Close to the Road “Konig’s debut is downright Bombeckian. . . . Hilarious…brilliant.”---USA Today “Konig is an exceptional humorist on the order of Erma Bombeck and Jean Kerr.”---Library Journal“As a psychologist, I can’t recommend lying to your children. But, as a psychologist, I can recommend laughter, and this book will tickle your funny bone in every chapter.”---Dr. Joyce Brothers “Despite its humorous tone, readers will often be touched by the more sensitive moments. . . . Though this debut will hold particular interest for harried parents, even single women will be delighted by this amusing glimpse into American family life.”---Publishers Weekly “Like many journalists who become full-time moms, Susan Konig wrote a book about it. Yet, unlike most of the recent onslaught of such titles, hers is unpretentious and even funny. Konig tells it like it is.”---New York Post “Give it to the mother you want to make smile.”---National Review “Laugh-out-loud hilarious . . . Susan Konig tells the truth about exactly what you’re in for when you have kids.” ---Sandi Kahn Shelton, author of Preschool Confidential and What Comes After Crazy “Thank you, thank you, Susan Konig, for telling the truth about American women. . . . How refreshing to encounter a real-world mom who doesn’t pretend she’s all that.” ---Elizabeth Cohen, author of The House on Beartown Road “Readers will cringe in fear and burst with delight at the endless juggling, improvisation, and reinventing Konig needs to keep her sanity, her marriage, and her kids in one place.”---Bruce Stockler, author of I Sleep at Red Lights: A True Story of Life After Triplets

It is an invaluable resource for practising midwives, midwifery students, other health professionals and childbearing women alike. The new 1995 supplement provides up to date information about ongoing studies as well as details of new studies and should be used in conjunction with the benchmark 1994 edition.

In Love & in Danger is a guide designed to help teens help themselves. The book opens with the personal narratives of three young women. While the details of their stories are distinct, all three describe with devastating accuracy how unhealthy, addictive love differs from nurturing, positive relationships. Later chapters provide profiles of dating abusers, help readers identify whether their relationships are abusive, and offer suggestions for coping and making a difference. The quasi workbook format is helpful for young people embroiled in abusive relationships--whether they are abused and looking for escape or abusers looking for a means to change. --Ericka Lutz

Beginning with the "10 Greatest Lies About Pregnancy" (number 10: Lamaze works), and ending with postpartum dementia, Vicki Iovine's Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy has fast become the laywoman's mouthpiece for the American pregnancy experience. Iovine is irreverent, sassy, and incredibly reassuring as she exposes the "truths" of pregnancy and childbirth, from sex to cellulite to cesareans. Iovine birthed four kids in six years, none of them twins, which certainly qualifies her as an expert. The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy does reveal Iovine's particular cultural biases (pregnant or not, most of us don't have record-producer husbands, hang out with supermodels, or wear size-four pants) and philosophical beliefs (she's not a particularly strong proponent of natural childbirth or nursing), but, taken with a grain or two of salt, she provides many hilarious moments, acres of advice, and honest reassurance readers will find nowhere else. --Ericka Lutz
